THE ATTRACTION OF GOING SMALL IN PRIVATE EQUITY
Private equity firms that run funds in the neighborhood of only a few hundred million to a couple of billion are gaining popularity over subscribing to mega-funds. Many GPs in this space have excellent tracks records and pedigree to show. This roundtable will explore: What are the characteristics of small buyout deals? What kinds of investments do these firms characteristically make? What does it take to really move the needle performance-wise at the portfolio company level in the lower middle market? Why do LPs benefit from investing with these firms?


Speaker Bio

John L. Pouschine is a Managing Director and Co-Founder of Pouschine Cook, a private equity firm with more than $250 million of capital under management. Prior to co-founding Pouschine Cook in 1998, Mr. Pouschine was a Senior Vice President and Director of London-based Electra Private Equity, where he managed expansion financings, recapitalizations and add-on acquisitions out of their New York office. Mr. Pouschine also has extensive experience in working with entrepreneurs to upgrade management teams and transitioning family businesses.

Prior to Electra, Mr. Pouschine was a Vice President of Bradford Ventures, Ltd., where in addition to working on buyouts, he played a leading operating role turning around two portfolio companies. He began his career as an investment banker at Prudential Securities and a commercial banker at JP Morgan.

As an investor and director, Mr. Pouschine has guided several companies through periods of industry-leading growth, including Latex International, Mastercraft Boat Company, Doe& Ingalls, Great Lakes Caring, Act III Cinemas, DeCrane Aircraft Holdings, Family Christian Stores, Oxford Health Plans, Regent Communications and Steinway Musical Properties.

Mr. Pouschine currently serves as Chairman of the Board of a number of companies, including Latex International, Griswold Home Care and FHS Holdings. He is also a board member of several not-for-profit organizations.

Mr. Pouschine graduated from Princeton University and from Harvard Business School.
